25 October ~2009

We have had several snows in October, and some bitter cold. The weather patterns that develop in October sometimes stay throughout the winter, which could mean we are in for a snowy one.

Me and the dogs have gotten out a lot, even in bad weather. I have never forgotten something Thoreau wrote about wanting to go out into during a storm, to be there when it clears off, when nature is at her most beautiful.

I have the best life in the world, with three border collies as my traveling companions. Not a lot brings me more joy than walking behind them while they are exploring either Cottonwood woodlands or alpine expanses. They keep tabs on where I am, run back periodically just to check on me, to make sure I don't get lost.

I keep them close when wildlife are around, and it is amazing how they mind me.   Not two long ago a rabbit took off running when we were out on a walk.  All three dogs watched it without chasing it, knowing I don't want them to do that.   That kind of training is important when we are up in Montana and instead of rabbits there could be grizzlies or wolves.

Yesterday I took my two daughters to see Wicked the Musical. I bought the tickets in April and still we were more than half way up on the side, which indicates the demand for these tickets on the Saturday before Halloween. Donna Vivino played Elpheba the witch, and she was absolutely tremendous. Her solos when she was deciding to fight the Wizard because of his cruelty to the animals of Oz were awe-inspiring. Chandra Lee Schwartz played Galinda. She has 'blonde' down perfectly.

To save time me and the girls drove downtown separately, and arranged to meet in front of the Hard Rock Cafe on the 16th Street Mall. I got there first and as I was waiting scores of zombies came by in both directions. Once in a while they would attack someone, converging on their victim like a dog pack. I had no idea what this was all about, and found out later I was in the middle of the fourth year of a Halloween Zombie Crawl in Downtown Denver. It was incredibly fun and I got some good pictures (Warning: photos contain simulations of zombie blood and gore). The one I probably can't show was the woman with white makeup and no top, except for a couple of black pasties with tassels.

I love this town.
