24 June ~ 2007

It was hot this weekend. I was glad I was not backpacking. When I go next week I am planning to start up the trailhead at 4pm, hoping to make seven miles by dark, in the cool of the evening.

At horse rescue I worked on tightening the fences again. This is a job that needs to be done quite often because CHR doesnt use any barb wire on their fences, and it doesnt take long for a 1000 pound horse rubbing against a wire to loosen it.

I know what doesnt work - pulling the wire around posts and securing them with staples. In two months time you find yourself pulling the staples out to try to tighten it again.

An in line strainer that you crank tight works real well, and I am going to start putting more of them in. You need to pull them down hard, but not overdo it. If an overtensioned wire breaks, you don't want to be anywere near.

The cats at horse rescue have disappeared, mostly from Coyotes. They have brought in a Jack Russell Terrior for the mousing. Right now he is still on leash, for fear that he will run back to the home that he was adopted from. I can't wait to see him wandering around the grounds.

It is good luck for the Swallows that roost in the barn that the cats are not around. I noticed two fledgling swallow babies when I was getting ready to leave. While I was sitting there looking at one its mother came down and fed it, right in front of me.

The more I go to Horse Rescue the more I like it. I love being around the horses, and I don't have to own a bunch of them to enjoy taking care of them.

When noone was around I went out and played my harmonica for Mom and her foal.
