I installed a gate on one of the metal corrals at horse rescue, and then finished putting up a roof and shade barriers for their permanent dog run. I think I enjoy fence work the most. Over the last few years I have gained some good practical knowledge on how to maintain them - using fence tighteners and post pullers and wire strainers. Its not hard but until you have done it a few times it seems a little foreign. I go around and examine the handiwork off others who have improved the fences over the years. The two best pieces of work I have found are securing a wooden rectange of posts and t-sections by making an 'X' of wire in the center and tightening it down. Then there is the loose wooden crossbar over by the mare's pasture that was secured by drilling a a couple of holes and placing in 10 inch bolts.It's nice being useful - and that is what work does for you , gives you a sense of accomplishment. I still go over and pound on the 8 foot post I dug out and cemented back in last September - just to see how firm in the ground it is - the knowledge of a job well done.
After that I visited my mother and put up a bird feeder with a wire mesh just outside her dining room window. I had given her a couple of others for Mother's day, but she didn't like the idea that the squirrels and starlings used them, and so she took them down. This new bird feeder only allows small finch-size birds in through the wire mesh - no sparrows or squirrels or starlings allowed. Before I left two house finches had already found it, and we watched them eat seeds while sitting at her dining room table.
When my Saturday busy-ness was finally over, me and Ben and Maggie went out and sat in the backyard, surrounded by all my trees. The leaves are unfolding into summer, and it is a little paradise back there, with all the greenery. Is there any place more beautiful than Colorado in the summer? In others eyes maybe so, but not in mine, because Colorado has something that no other place can have. It is home.
