5 May ~2008
Sunday I spent close to home, not wanting to tire Maggie out on the day before her surgery. I worked on the garden in the back, threw the frisbee for Ben, and sat in the chair next to the juniper and the cherry, taking in the reality that winter is truly over and spring is in its fullness. The pear and peach trees are done blooming back there, but the cherry and apple trees are still at their peak. I brought my camera out to the yard and took a few photos of them. (including the one above).
This friday is my last story for the year to the three classes of third graders. It will be the 9th story I have told them, beginning last September. The last one was on April 11, which can be listened to here.
It is very rewarding to search out a story that inspires me, and then practice it enough that I can communicate what is good about it to the children. The teachers are very kind and appreciative, and I look forward to doing this for many years, God willing.
Spring beauty (Claytonia lanceolatea) and Pasque Flower (Anemone patens) are two of the signature flowers for early springtime in the foothills. I have been out enough that I have seen both of them, several times. Add the wild plum and apple blossoms and this area is like heaven on earth.
I am finding that as I get older, peace and beauty are the only things that seem to be worth striving for, although maybe that is just because I am spend so much time in nature, and live alone with these loyal hearted border collies. It's a very simple life, and is just right for me.
