19 April ~2009

Me and the dogs spent Friday and Saturday near the wood stove, while a powerful spring snowstorm raged outside. I used the time to continue with the task of simplifying my home, to transform it into open, uncluttered space.  Since last December I have taken 9 pickup loads of stuff to Goodwill.  Sometimes I put items on the corner with a free sign on them, like I did my old woodstove and  set of weights.  It doesn't take long until someone comes by on 38th that wants them.

Countless studies have proven that having more stuff does not make us happier, after a certain threshold where our food, shelter, and clothing requirements are meant.   Wealth and stuff can get in the way of experiencing a simple, rich life.   Proof of that is  all the marvelous things I have seen with my dogs in the high country.   All that it cost was the health and desire to head up there.

Life eventually teaches us this lesson, if we don't learn it earlier on our own - all that matters is the day we are in and the gift of life that we have.

This morning our hike was up in the four feet of snow that fell Friday and Saturday in the foothills.  The snow was light, and my snowshoes sunk in eight inches.  Mollie eventually figured out that the best way to travel was right behind me, sometimes stepping on the backs of my snowshoes, like Maggie does.

It was gorgeous up there.  There is nothing as clear and pure than the melt of a Colorado spring snow.
