27 March ~2009

The photo above is what the last half of this winter has been like - with little snow down off the mountains.  Just as we were complaining about how dry it is, it all changed in a big way on Thursday.   It snowed a foot and a half  where I live, and was a full fledged spring blizzard, blowing the snow into deep drifts.  I would not have made it home from work if I hadn't pulled off and  put chains on my truck.

This time I was kind to the dogs, and didn't go out walking in it.  They  are starting to feel neglected though , being yard bound for a couple of days.  I will make it up to them tomorrow -  plan to get up early and be down on the greenbelt  at first light.  I havent done that it a while.

It looks like I won't have any pears this year, as the tree was half in bloom when the blizzard hit.

Today was the day for my monthly story to the three classes of third graders.  It got cancelled along with Thursday and Friday for the whole school district.  Two snow days surely made all the school kids thrilled to no get out.

I called the teacher and offered to make up the day, or just skip this month and tell my story in April.  I had worked hard preparing, and felt let down that I couldn't tell it.   I understand how important this is - telling young people stories of animals and wilderness and nature  or people that have touched me in some way.  This month it was going to be about Jane Goodall, who I got to meet last week when she signed a book after her lecture.  My plan is to donate the book to the elementary school library where I tell the stories.

I made a fire in the wood stove last night and enjoyed a warm and cozy evening down in the basement with the snow blowing outside.  It was perfect, at home with my three good dogs.
