1 March ~2009

I spent the weekend volunteering, at Colorado Horse Rescue (CHR), and preparing my garden for the new season.

Working at CHR is very satisfying, because I get to be around horses, and the staff there seem genuinely pleased with the hard work  I do.   I am into my third year there, which makes me relatively experienced, and some of the more demanding jobs go to me.  In the last month I built a new corral and gate, then Saturday constructed a wind break with a tarp top for the horses that went into it.

I wasn't done an hour before  I started thinking of ways I could better secure the tarp, which will have to wait until  I am there next.

All the volunteering I do is really about being involved in community, which is a positive thing.  There is plenty of cynicism in this world, and it is important to find a path that you know is good, and stay true to it.

At horse rescue  Ben chased his ball out into the middle of a pasture, then sat down and watched me as I loaded my truck with manure for my garden.  Mollie had to be sitting right next to him, the whole time. It is pretty clear she is more bonded to him than me.

I have decided to double the size of my garden, considering how much I ate from it last season.  (from May into October).  That involves taking out some overgrown shrubs between where it is now and the south fence.  It will keep me busy until planting time, and in the process will make me stronger and healthier.

All this sounds like a quiet, solitary life, which it is.  In the back I had three dogs and two cats overseeing my work though, plus Amy's guinea pig and rabbit that  I brought out to get some sun.
