21 January~2008
It was awful cold today, staying in single digits for the high. It felt fine when I went down to the Greenbelt this morning though, wearing my extreme cold weather gear (a mad bomber hat and ice armour mittens). I just couldn't leave my mittens off for very long when I was taking photos. I didn't see anyone else down there.
Saturday night was wild at the Rose, as is typically the case around stock show time, when people show up from out of town. That is a big deal for me, as there are more gorgeous ladies to dance with than normal. There were plenty of memorable dances, but the best had to be when the band played 8 second ride (enter userid of 'music' and password of 'music' to listen to it) and my partner was a woman with long brownish-blond hair and a smile like a July timberline morning.
Moving around that floor with a woman like her to the rhythmic beat of that song is one of the best things I have ever experienced. It sure makes up for quiet nights I spend at home during the week.
8 second ride has always been on of my favorites to dance to, even from back when the days when my wife and I used to twostep to it. Once around stock show time Chris Ledoux's band sat in (without Chris) on a night when the floor wasnt crowded , which was quite a thrill.
Some Saturday's are better than others, and this one was as good as I can remember. I left just beore 2am, and had to keep the defrost on all the way home because my heat was fogging up the windows of my truck.
Jason Aldean's band showed up around 1am (without Jason), and played several songs, including Pink Houses by John Mellencamp. (enter userid of 'music' and password of 'music.' The lyrics seemed appropriate: "Aint that America, you and me, Home of the Free.' Before that the normal band had played Amarillo By Morning. (userid of 'music', password of 'music.' ) I always listen for the words: "I aint got a dime but what I got is mine. I aint rich, but Lord I'm free.'
Earlier in the evening there had been a conflict between some of the out of town cowboys and a large biker dude. (who had several friends nearby). It was let go and there were no fights inside. Everybody went back to having a good time. What the cowboys probably didn't know was he is a regular, that is seen almost every week like the rest of us, so the bouncers are going to cut him plenty of slack.Chris Ledoux's song 5 Dollar Fine (userid of 'music', password of 'music.' ) describes the atmosphere and energy in there on most Saturdays. Most people just want to let loose and celebrate another week lived.
I like it that it was so easy for me to give up drinking - allows me to concentrate all the way on those beautiful women I dance with. Back in the days that I would have beer on Saturday nights (8+ years ago), my wife used to tease me about my twostep late in the evening. It was awful fun though, having a pitcher of draft beer and sliding around that hardwood with her til we were exhausted. It wouldn't be a good idea now, since I do the driving home. And giving up the drinking is one of the better ways to stay active in your older years.Saturday at dusk we had the most beautiful sunset. I was driving, and pulled off the road to take some photos of it. Its an incredible gift, this life, and this earth. We all have troubles and living a long time means sorrow will come our way. In the midst of it all is plenty of beauty and joy, thats for sure.
