1 January~2008
I had a quiet New Year's week - off work. I stayed home most days, taking walks with Ben and Maggie in the mornings, but going to dances on Tuesday (Lindy at Mercury) and Thursday (Two Stepping at Grizzly Rose) evenings. Friday I got up and went to volunteer at Colorado Horse Rescue, which was like gold to me, even though I did mostly barn work (raking loose hay, cleaning the stalls). I found plenty of time to go out and hang around the horses.
I realize I need to adapt to a quiet life - in a few years I will retire, and all my time will be my own. Then my backpacking and dancing and volunteer work will be my main jobs, which sounds pretty good. Too many people get to their retirement and can't think of anything to do but go back to work, and I don't want that to be me.
The foxes are breeding now on the Greenbelt. The males walk around in a fit, screaming like the crazed beings they are. I have seen three in the last week, which is rare. They are careless in their quest to complete their circle. The end result will be some fox kits in May with round heads and big eyes - cute as can be. I have said before that once me and Ben and Maggie were watching three fox babies outside of their den in the late afternoon sun. Their Mom came up through some trees and barked at them once. All three dove into the den, immediately.
