This page is a repository for stories and journal notes gleaned from a naturalists' life long walk in the beautiful forests, mountains and meadows of the State of Colorado
The definition of a naturalist is 'a person who is versed in or devoted to natural history, esp. a zoologist or botanist.' (Random House) . A naturalist's facts are presented best using the skills of a storyteller.
Storytelling was used for ages as a means of passing down wisdom. It is being rediscovered today, by groups such as the National Storytellers Association.
To be a storyteller, you must first become a good listener.
For people who love the West, - its mountains, rivers, sky, wildlife, thunderstorms, sunrises, sunsets, wind. . . , it becomes a part of your soul, and can inspire an admiration that is lifelong. The innate beauty, strength, or lonliness of nature in the west can be mirrored in the characters of individuals who live in it. Read some quotes of other people who share a heartfelt passion for the 'Western Landscape and Western Spirit.'
C.S. Lewis said that we read to know that we are not alone. That must be part of the reason I love the works of Rachel Carson, John Muir, John Burroughs, Thoreau, and other naturalists and philosophers. I am strengthened and inspired when I read their views about nature. Click Here to read some of my favorite quotes and selections.
I have received great mail from people who also have a passion for beauty of the natural world. Read some of the stories they have shared with me.
There's nothing like a contrary opinion to generate thought, discussion and new ideas. I enjoy reading Alston Chase's articles criticizing environmentalism as being Godless. Read a ' response' that was printed in a Denver paper.
These jottings are little more than a reflection of the places I have walked through, as Rick Bass says, a 'shadow of the landscape.'

'Life starts the fire. Love fans the flame.

a sense of the power and mystery of nature shall spring up as fully in one's heart after he has made the circuit of his own field as after returning from a voyage round the world
